Intuition announces world first in mobile learning via PDA

Financial services institution first to uses BlackBerry® for learning on the move

Dublin/London, 29th November 2006 – Intuition, the technology-enabled learning expert, has announced the deployment of the world’s first fully trackable mobile e-learning course for PDAs such as BlackBerry®. The course has been developed for financial services institutions, and enables users’ progress to be tracked and recorded automatically, making mandatory training easier to deploy, more convenient and fully auditable.

Mobile learning has become popular with the financial services industry in particular because of the growing need for employees to complete mandatory training courses around new banking and trading regulations. Mobile learning enables employees to make use of naturally occurring periods of ‘down time’ – such as the daily commute or business trips – for training purposes. Mandatory training also has to be accessible to staff in the most convenient formats possible to ensure uptake across the board, and trackable mobile learning represents the latest advance in ‘anytime, anywhere’ training.

Financial services institutions are working with Intuition to launch training delivered via BlackBerry® in response to growing business needs for remote access to learning via existing and new converged devices. Intuition demonstrated this new training technology at the recent Learning 2006 conference in Florida. Using the ever increasing popularity of the PDA as a way of delivering training is also an added benefit to companies that have already made the investment in the technology for communications purposes.

Intuition’s mobile learning technology was developed to meet the needs of the typical mobile user, who actually only uses their PDA for a short period of time, but may access it between 30-40 times during the day. The mobile device user typically also has quite a short attention span, so the content needs to be targeted, specific and punchy in order to engage the user’s interest. The targeted content can include information or specific courses on product spotlights or updates, regulatory requirements, organisational procedures and policies and case studies.

David Harrison, Chief Executive of Intuition, commented, “We are thrilled to have pioneered this new development in mobile learning, which transforms the PDA from being simply a communication device, into a vital tool for learning. We are seeing demand for these sorts of courses rise considerably, as companies are increasingly required to produce records of staff learning. Therefore, the ability to update individuals’ progress directly to their learning management system is hugely beneficial. We believe this method of trackable mobile learning will become an integral part of organisations’ training programmes in the very near future.”

Intuition and the NHS register over 12,000 users on training programme to combat Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs)

London, October 2006: Intuition – an expert in technology-enabled learning - and the NHS have announced that over 12,000 users have registered for its online training programme to combat Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs). The programme was lauded at its launch in October 2005 as one of the UK ’s most ambitious education projects, and has since become a standard training package. It is available free of charge to all NHS staff, from the NHS e-learning website, at www.infectioncontrol.nhs.uk

The programme is unlike any previous NHS training package in that it is designed to be relevant to all levels of staff within the organisation – from cleaners and receptionists to nurses and doctors, managers and chief executives – and with two versions of the programme available tailored to suit clinical and non-clinical staff. It was developed on behalf of the NHS at Thames Valley University ’s Richard Wells Research Centre, in conjunction with Intuition. The NHS Core Learning Unit (CLU) – sponsor of the programme – has commented that numbers registered on the infection control programme are running significantly ahead of projections.

All new and current members of NHS staff are required to receive training in infection prevention. With good practice and careful hygiene it has been estimated that around 15-30% of HAIs – such as the so-called ‘superbug’, MRSA – could be avoided. The three-part programme covers all key aspects of infection prevention and staff can access individual modules in their own time and track their progress online. Remote access to the programme from home or non-work locations gives users much greater flexibility to complete the course than before, and in turn increases further uptake as training is made more lifestyle-friendly.

“Numbers registering on the infection control programme have far exceeded expectations,” says June Lancaster, Head of Learning Programmes at the NHS CLU. “Twelve thousand users is well ahead of projections, but it is also just the beginning in terms of the potential impact of this programme. We expect that this resource will be applicable widely across the healthcare sector. So far a high proportion of registered users are from a nursing background, which is very positive – but there’s also a big push to increase the uptake of the programme for non-clinical staff, initially through engaging with estates and facilities managers.”

Last month the Core Learning Unit and Intuition piloted a solution with Devon PCT to tackle the problems of accessibility to IT hardware and poor computer literacy by use of tablet PCs. The HAI programme is available on A4-sized tablet PCs running offline, meaning that it is truly accessible at any place and at any time. Tablet PCs help the programme reach the widest possible audience and offer a state-of-the-art e-learning experience, which is cost effective, easy to use and highly intuitive. A digitised pen removes the need for any pre-existing keyboard skills and offers a user-friendly platform from which to learn.

Intuition also runs the hugely successful NHS Online Decontamination Programme, which was launched in 2004 to Acute Trusts around England and Northern Ireland . Earlier in 2005, the Department of Health launched ‘Saving Lives’ - a delivery programme to reduce Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA - to ensure that staff recognise how they can contribute to reducing infection and adopt best practice. Intuition’s education programme is part of the Saving Lives campaign and is the first of its kind to address the needs of all staff.

Intuition identifies that compliance training is a key issue for UK financial services institutions

Staff need more training in areas such as money laundering

- 80% of FSIs are increasing compliance training in 2006
- 60% view money laundering as a significant training issue
- 53% of FSIs claim full compliance readiness for MiFID

A survey (1) commissioned by Intuition, the leading provider of technology-enabled learning for financial enterprises, and conducted by Datamonitor, has shown that 80% of the UK's major financial services institutions (FSIs) intend to increase investment in compliance-focused training this year, as a response to both the growth in compliance technology deployments and persistent concerns over issues such as money laundering. Datamonitor surveyed senior executives responsible for compliance at 15 of the UK's top 20 FSIs.

The survey clearly demonstrates a growing realisation among FSIs that the implementation of compliance policies and procedures needs to be backed up with comprehensive training across the entire organisation. This was highlighted by a growing need for better knowledge among FSI staff of money laundering practices, including how to identify potentially illegal transactions. With governments wanting to clamp down on both terrorist funding and international financial crime, FSIs are under increased pressure in this area - 60% anticipated that money laundering will be a significant compliance training issue for 2006.

However, training needs were not just restricted to professionals - with regulations such as Basel II and Sarbanes Oxley making board level executives directly responsible for their organisations' state of compliance, 33% of the FSIs surveyed said that they needed to carry out more training of senior management in areas such as risk management and corporate accountability.

Another interesting finding of the survey was in terms of readiness for MiFID, which is due to come into force in November 2007. 53% of FSIs said that they were already fully prepared and compliant with MiFID, with a further 33% stating that they were nearing compliance readiness, despite the fact that some of the finer details of MiFID are still to be finalised.

The survey also revealed that 100% of the companies intended to increase spending on compliance technology, and that over 70% of respondents were planning to increase investment in compliance processes. Additionally, over 50% of the companies surveyed intended to spend more on compliance strategy.

"FSIs have been hit by a wave of regulations over the past few years, which has strengthened the requirement for staff to adopt and learn new procedures in order for their organisations to be compliant," said David Harrison, CEO of Intuition.
"As such, good training is clearly at the very heart of compliance, particularly as FSIs are subject to substantial penalties if staff are not following the correct processes. Our survey clearly shows that FSIs understand this and are proactively doing something about it."

"However, it is important that training is carried out in a way that fits around learners' existing work commitments. It is also vital that the training is itself effective, and that it can be shown to have been received and understood. As such, e-learning is an excellent way of conducting compliance training, as it offers both the flexibility of online access and provides a demonstrable record of the courses that learners have successfully completed."
