Education campaign to battle Healthcare Associated Infections is launched in UK hospitals

25 October 2005 - The biggest education campaign inside the NHS to date to drive down the number of healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) has been launched.

The education programme will be available to all 1.3 million NHS staff in England, making it one of the most ambitious education projects undertaken in the UK.

The programme has been developed on behalf of the NHS at Thames Valley University’s Richard Wells Research Centre, in conjunction with professional education company Intuition Publishing Limited.

It is unlike any other previous training because it is designed to be relevant to all levels of staff within the NHS, from cleaners and receptionists to nurses, doctors, managers and chief executives. There are two versions of the programme tailored to suit clinical and non-clinical staff.

All new and current members of NHS staff are required to receive training in infection prevention. The Education Programme has become the standard training package and is available free of charge to all NHS staff.

Accessibility and literacy were priorities in the programme’s design. Importantly, it can be taught in a classroom or over the Internet. The online learning programme uses media including video, 3D and Flash animations.

The three-part programme covers all key aspects of infection prevention and staff can access individual modules in their own time and track their progress.

Hand washing is the most important action in preventing infection and this is highlighted in the training. Most of the programme looks at real life situations where decisions around safety have to be made.

The programme is available at http://home.teknical.com/nhselearn.

Chief Nurse Officer (England) Professor Christine Beasley said, “It is vital that everyone in the NHS and outside in other healthcare settings makes reducing infection and improving infection control their business. This innovative approach to training will mean hundreds and thousands of NHS staff can improve their knowledge of infection control and really help in driving down avoidable infections. I would like to see everyone, from Chief Executives and consultants right through to cleaners and healthcare assistants accessing this resource and improving their knowledge and skills."

Christine Beasley is an Honorary Professor of Thames Valley University.

Currently one in nine patients will acquire an infection as a result of healthcare treatment at a cost of £1 billion pounds per annum.

Although not all such infections are preventable, it is thought that almost one third are.

Earlier this year the Department of Health launched Saving Lives: a delivery programme to reduce Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA to ensure staff recognise how they can contribute to reducing infection and adopt best practice. This multifaceted education programme is part of the Saving Lives campaign and the first of its kind to address the needs of all staff.

Minister for Finance, Mr. Brian Cowen T.D. Launches Innovative Learning Resource: Business Studies Interactive (BSI)

Jointly developed by EBS Building Society and the Business Studies Teachers Association of Ireland, BSI is now available to all Business Studies Teachers in Ireland

February 2005 - Business Studies Interactive (BSI) , an innovative CD-ROM based resource for second level business students was launched by Mr Brian Cowen T.D., Minister for Finance, at an event in Marian College, Ballsbridge, Dublin.

Jointly developed by EBS Building Society and the Business Studies Teachers' Association of Ireland (BSTAI), Business Studies Interactive is a comprehensive and original e-learning tool designed primarily to complement all three sections of the Junior Cert Business Studies syllabus. It has been developed to enable students to put their theoretical based knowledge and skills into practice using real life situations as examples.

Speaking at the launch of the BSI CD-ROM, Minister Cowen highlighted the importance of understanding financial planning and money management issues: “Without a basic knowledge and understanding of money matters people can find themselves at a distinct disadvantage when trying to make personal finance decisions throughout the course of their lives. This tool can be used in the school or by families at home and should help equip students with the level of knowledge that will help them as they move toward increased personal independence. I want to commend EBS and the BSTAI for having the foresight to develop this very usable and useful resource.”

Also commenting at the launch was EBS CEO Ted McGovern who explained where the idea for BSI came from: “The idea for the development of BSI came directly from our members. Following a consultative process members highlighted to us that they felt that EBS was uniquely positioned to help increase access to non-product specific educational information on financial matters. As a mutual organisation with a strong educational heritage, we agreed that it was appropriate that EBS should take the lead in developing a tool which not only enhances the classroom based learning of financial education but also sets the foundation for building lifelong financial confidence. We are delighted to have partnered with the BSTAI on this innovative project and look forward to strengthening the relationship with them in years to come.”

Norah Martyn, Honorary National President of the Business Studies Teachers Association of Ireland commented on the new resource which is now being distributed for use among all BSTAI members; “One of the biggest problems that our members have faced in recent years is finding a suitable interactive and technological solution to make the Business Studies syllabus more engaging for students. With such rapid developments in technology, the way in which consumers carry out their everyday financial transactions is changing and in many instances e.g. online banking; it has become increasingly difficult to demonstrate these changes in a classroom setting. BSI not only represents a chance for teachers to appeal to different learning styles by offering a break from traditional textbooks, but it also makes the syllabus more relevant to today's increasingly tech savvy students. Our members are delighted to have worked side by side with EBS to develop this resource and look forward to seeing the impact that the CD-ROM will have in our classrooms.”

Now being distributed for use among all 800 plus members of the BSTAI, Business Studies Interactive explores a range of topics from banking to consumer education and bookkeeping. It also incorporates a range of practical exercises such as asking students to complete a household budget or asking them to take part in a consumer rights quiz. There are also several demonstrations which take students through online banking and ATM banking, allowing teachers to bring real life situations into the classroom.

Business Studies Interactive covers six topics linked to the Business of Living, the Economics and the Accounts sections of the Junior Cert Business Studies syllabus. Easy to navigate and straightforward in layout, the topics addressed include; Banking; Budgeting; Taxes; Foreign Exchange; Consumer Rights and Bookkeeping. As well as complementing the Business Studies syllabus, the resource is also suitable for use in Transition Year. It can be used in both group and individual study.

Business Studies Interactive is a new addition to the range of consumer information tools and services that EBS has developed under the theme of ‘Shared Knowhow'. The Company's objective through these activities i s to share financial know-how with everyone by increasing access to, and improving insight into, the basic issues of money management and financial skills. Resources that fall under this umbrella include online resource; Inside Track, First Time Buyers seminars and the Little Books about series.

The e-learning resource was produced in association with Intuition, the financial education specialists. Established in 1985, Intuition is the market leader in financial services education and was chosen by EBS and BSTAI as their partner for the development of this tool due to its vast experience in this field.
